Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

America Reads tutors provide tutoring services at Spartanburg area public schools, local nonprofit, governmental agencies and community-based organizations. Tutors serve as reading tutors for preschool and elementary school age children (K5th grade) and assist with after school homework programs. Tutors work under the direction of the teacher of the classroom they are assigned to. may be assigned to work with students in a variety of settings: one-on-one, small group and/or large group (in rare situations). Tutors may also be assigned to work in before and/or after school programs depending upon their availability. Tutors work with children to provide additional support in the areas of reading readiness, writing, spelling and mathematics. The specific tutor job duties will be assigned by the classroom teacher or site coordinator. The work site will be decided by the student and student’s supervisor.


Applicant must be a USC Upstate student eligible for Federal Work-Study. Contact the Financial Aid Office to determine your eligibility. Applicants must demonstrate an ability and eagerness to work with children from diverse backgrounds. Committed, dependable, organized and caring qualities are a must. Personal vehicle is required for transportation to site locations. Must make commitment to the program for one academic year. Bring a copy of the work-study award letter to the interview. Experience tutoring elementary-age children preferred. Education majors are encouraged to apply.
