Advertised Job Summary

The student assistant for African-American Studies provides clerical support for the department office. Responsibilities include answering the phone, helping faculty and students with university-related requests, assist with events and projects, and assists with maintenance and inventory of office supplies and equipment. The student will also assist with preparation of on-campus and off-campus mailings, filing, word processing, faxing, copying, and running campus errands. Additional duties may be requested as needed.


Must be a current student at USC Upstate who is available to work anytime between the hours of 8:30am – 5:00pm, Monday – Friday (flexible), for 10 – 12 hours per week. Preference given to afternoon availability.

Additional Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of computers and other office equipment
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook email, Excel, and internet
- Familiarity with current social media platforms
- Ability to communicate efficiently with faculty, staff, and students
- Neat appearance and professional phone manner
- Dependable and punctual
- Ability to work with minimal supervision, maintain confidentiality, and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:

- Knowledge of or interest in African-American Studies
- Sophomores / Juniors with a minimum GPA of 3.0
- Federal work-study award preferred
