The University of South Carolina Upstate invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Education. The School consists of 28 faculty and 900 undergraduate majors with degrees in early childhood, elementary, middle level, physical education, secondary, special education, exercise and sport science, and child development and family studies. Master’s degrees are offered in early childhood, elementary, and special education: visual impairment. The School of Education is accredited by CAEP, and its professional preparation programs are approved by the South Carolina Department of Education and the respective professional organizations. The Dean is the chief administrative officer and academic leader of the School reporting to the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

The University of South Carolina Upstate is a comprehensive public university and a senior institution of the University of South Carolina and is among the fastest growing universities in the State. USC Upstate is located between Charlotte and Atlanta along the I-85 corridor, one of the fastest growing business and high-tech regions in the country. The campus is within easy driving distance of the Appalachian mountains and the Atlantic Ocean beaches. Required Education and Experience

The successful candidate must have an earned doctorate from an accredited institution and qualify as a full professor in the School. In addition, candidates must have a minimum of three years of experience at the department head, division head or center director level or above. Candidates must possess a record of attracting external funding; a record of cultivating and maintaining strong ties with local school systems; a demonstrated commitment to diversity; significant leadership experience with CAEP and state and local collaborations; a commitment to innovative approaches for programming; and strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.

Fundamental to this position, the dean of the School of Education (SOE) must be knowledgeable about CAEP/InTASC accreditation standards. It is essential that he/she is capable of maintaining USC Upstate’s CAEP/InTASC accreditation status.

The dean must possess the ability to identify closely with the various disciplines within the school in order to articulate their concerns to the administration and to relate university-wide aims and purposes to the needs and goals of the school. The dean assists the associate dean in fostering the professional development of the school faculty and coordinates the development of new programs. The dean is responsible for representing the financial needs of the school in the annual academic budget and for coordinating the allocation of approved operating and equipment funds. In personnel matters, the dean should be advised by committees composed of SOE faculty representatives; however, the dean is ultimately responsible for all recommendations to appropriate academic officials, committees, or agencies outside the school or university. To provide this type of leadership, the dean must bring to this office a distinguished career in teaching and scholarship, together with effective communication skills and administrative experience. He/she must be able to elicit the professional trust and respect of the faculty so as to speak with a representative and persuasive voice in the larger university community concerning matters of the school. Successful background check is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Successful K-12 and university teaching experience in an appropriate discipline and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and advising are preferred. Five years of experience at the department head, division head or center director level or above is preferred.
