Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

The assistant director for Multicultural Student Affairs will create and expand the various peer mentor and retention programs to assist in the recruitment, retention and matriculation needs of historically marginalized students at the University of South Carolina. The assistant director will primarily oversee the peer mentor program development, support services, program assessment and student evaluation that will not only aid in the retention of historically marginalized student identities but their progression to on-time graduation. This staff member will also collaborate with campus partners to develop effective mentoring, advising, evaluation, and intervention systems for historically marginalized students to provide departmental support and guidance on effective methods for retaining and providing cultural and campus support and providing individual support to students in their academic pursuits and personal development.

Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions)

Master’s degree in Higher Education and 3 years of related experience working with underserved student populations, and relevant experiences with diversity and social justice education, experience in understanding cultural competence and historically marginalized student issues in higher education. A flexible work schedule is required. Evening and weekend hours will be required.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong content knowledge in diversity, cultural competence, and social justice and the concerns of the underrepresented communities, college students, and a dedication to student growth and development.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of issues related to identity and needs along with the intersections of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expressions of other areas of diversity as experienced in an institution of higher education.

- Possess strategic planning, management and a commitment to continuous improvement
- Knowledge of retention strategies and theories, for diverse student groups
- Knowledge of student development theories, strong written and oral communication skills and computer proficiency
- Ability to keep complete, detailed, and accurate records; ability gather and analyze data and to draw relevant conclusions from the data
- Word processing and computer skills
